Male and Female Athlete

Athlete difference between male & female have much to do with their innovative characteristics determined by genes and hormones. These include height , weight , body mass , body fat & aerobic capacity. As a group, women do not run, jump or swim as fast as men . Women are also prone to certain types of athletic injuries then men.

Estrogen :- Higher estrogen levels results in women having more body fat then men . The earnest female athlete as the Top marathon runners have body fat of approx. twice present compared with that present of their male counterparts. Furthermore women’s bodies have less muscles as compared to men and also the joints of the females are more flexible which provides greater range of motion .

Furthermore , an advantage in various sports such as Gymnastics , the wider female pelvis effects the alignment as well as the movement of the extremities .

Men on the other hand have a dominating hormone called TESTOSTERONE which gives them a performance advantages in some different manner. This hormone basically allows the men to grow larger skeletal muscles (bigger muscular size) . This hormone also promotes the men to have a larger heart.

Men also have higher percentage of TYPE 2 muscle fiber which is basically responsible for greater strength , power , speed and agility. Another very important aspect which many of us might not be knowing is the ability of testosterone to increase the production of RBC (Red Blood Cells) which absorbs oxygen resulting in a greater Aerobic Threshold .(increasing the aerobic endurance in males)

WOMEN’s In INJURIES :- Biologically women are likely to be injury prone . Joints such as Shoulder and Knee Joint are more compromised then that compared to men. Weaker shoulder muscles results in supporting tissues being loose meaning the joints is less stable then in men.

INJURY AREAS:- Anterior Cruciate Ligament a.k.a ACL , major ligament found in the knee joint is most likely to get injured in the females . Proper training and strengthening of supporting muscle could result in the prevention of such injuries.

WOMEN SPORTS RECORDS:- Below is the gender gap in athletic performance as shown in records from olympics .

The mean difference has been about 10% between men and women for all the events. The mean gap is 10.7% for running , 8.9% for swimming and 17.5% for jumping . An elite level of women athlete can compete with a men with sub-average performance .Where physical balance and mental concentration are essential women can compete on a performance with men.
